Here are the images taken from our 2019 events.

2019 Art in the Park

Wednesday 30 January 2019
Sullivan Lake

An awesome family day organised by the Sullivan Lake Care Group. So many individuals and groups showed up to make this a lovely experience for all. Spot the Care Group in orange vests, the Whakatāne High School Interact Club in blue vests, and heaps of others below.

2019 Sculpture Symposium

20 - 28 January 2019
Whakatāne Rose Gardens

Over 15 sculptors were with us for the symposium this year, churning out amazing works under the gazebos in the blazing heat! The images below were taken on Wednesday 30, as shapes started to emerge from the works.

Over Anniversary Weekend, the sculptors were joined by other artists, The Travelling Tuataras, Aisling the Stilt-Walker, and our local ukulele group! All contributed to the fun, festive, family-friendly atmosphere. Looking forward to this event in 2020.

Pop-up Gallery Opening - Wednesday 5 December 2018

Thanks to all who attended this celebration, and thank you to all of the artists showing their works on our walls. We were excited to have Melanie Yazzie in attendance on her last evening in Whakatāne, having just finished her Volcanic Artist Residency (organised by Museum and Arts, supported by Arts Whakatāne). Her work, and the work of many others can be seen below.

The pop-up will be open over summer - come down and see what's changed over the months.

Arts Whakatāne fundraiser: Yellow is Forbidden

Whakamax Movies - Sunday 18 November 2018.

We held a special fundraiser screening of Pietra Brettkelly's documentary Yellow is Forbidden and were thrilled to have Pietra there with us! This was a fantastic evening, and proceeds will go on to fund more local arts activity. Thanks to all in attendance, and in particular Pietra and the Brettkelly whanau for adding extra excitement and depth to the evening.
